When Jennifer Fujikawa was diagnosed with LAM in 2015, she reached out to The LAM Foundation for online information, resources, and patient support programs. Since then, the Foundation has been Jennifer’s source of hope – and the LAM community is like her extended family. Jennifer is an active fundraiser for the Foundation, writing letters to friends and family to tell her story and ask for their help to find a cure for LAM. “By getting support from family and friends, you can help raise money for the Foundation, which also supports research,” she says. “Research helps to find cures and treatments, and that’s how they came out with (the FDA-approved drug) sirolimus, which has really helped me greatly.”
Jennifer’s family has stepped up to the fundraising challenge in a big way. This year, her sister Lori was able to increase her initial $5,000 gift to $15,000. How? By getting her donation triple-matched by her employer. The company offers different matching gift opportunities, which Lori always tries to take advantage of for The LAM Foundation.
Lori’s gift highlights a burgeoning trend in workplace philanthropy.
According to America’s Charities, approximately $5 billion is raised through workplace giving annually. More than two-thirds of employees say it is imperative to work at a company where the culture is supportive of giving and volunteering.
Jennifer’s advice to donors is to check with their employer’s Human Resources department on whether they have a matching gift program. “It’s a wonderful way to make your efforts stretch farther and multiply your dollars for a good cause.” By having your gift matched, you can contribute even more money to fight LAM -- with very little extra work.
Like Lori, you have the power to help us build a future without LAM by participating in your employer’s matching gifts program. Many companies will double, or even triple, your donation to The LAM Foundation. If the Foundation isn’t already among your company’s preferred charities, you can ask that we be added.
