FDA’s new Rare Disease Framework Initiative is a meaningful step forward for the rare disease community
The FDA’s new Rare Disease Framework Initiative is a meaningful step forward for the rare disease community, and it’s a moment to think about how far we’ve come and the many people who helped got us here.
For years, women living with rare diseases have shared their stories, spoken up about their needs, and helped others understand what it really means to live with a rare condition. The LAM Foundation has been part of that conversation every step of the way, holding the patient voice central to all that we do.
It’s encouraging to see the importance of those voices recognized in this new effort. For the LAM community, it could open the door to new ways of thinking about some of the challenges we know so well: small patient populations, gaps in what we know about how the disease progresses, and how to measure the effectiveness of treatments. Just as important, it creates more room for patients, researchers, clinicians, and regulators to learn from one another and work toward better answers.
We’re not just celebrating that our voices are being heard. We’re looking forward to helping shape what happens next. The LAM Foundation plans to take part in the public comment process and share what we’ve learned from the women and families who make up our community.
Getting to this point has taken years of people speaking up, showing up, sharing what they know, and working together. We’re grateful to everyone who has been part of that journey. And we’re hopeful for what this “quantum leap” could mean, not just for the future of LAM but for the future of rare disease.
